Stetson Loses Yet Another Close Game

Jan 26, 2011 8:16 PM

Stetson lost in triple-overtime to Florida Gulf Coast on Tuesday night.

Three of Stetson's last four games have came down to the final possession.

"As far as basketball goes, this is about as tough as it can be," coach Derek Waugh said.

"We've lost three out of four games on essentially one possession. In my career before this year, I've probably had one of those games, maybe two where you lose on one possession. ... It's tough to the psyche."

Jacksonville, North Florida Isn't Yet A Rivalry

Jan 26, 2011 8:09 PM

North Florida coach Matthew Driscoll says the team doesn't yet have a rivalry with Jacksonville.

The teams have played 12 times since 2004, the last 11 as conference rivals after North Florida joined the league before the 2005-06 season.

Jacksonville has won 10 of those 11 games, including a victory in 2004.
"I don't know that I view it as a rivalry because you have to win games to call it that," Driscoll said. "We're 1 and 11 against them. It's hard to pound your chest and say it's a rivalry if you don't win your share of games in the series.

"Look at Belmont and Lipscomb and the rivalry they have going in Nashville. Both teams have won in that series. They go 50-50 as to who will win those games. Same with teams like Duke and North Carolina. A great rivalry because both teams have had success.

"That's the direction we want to go to build this into a great rivalry. But in order for that to happen, we have to win some of these games."

Improvement Not Enough For Florida Gulf Coast

Jan 7, 2011 12:07 PM

Florida Gulf Coast has lost three straight and nine of their last 10 games.

After a disappointing blowout loss to Belmont at home on Monday night, the Eagles faded in the second half against Lipscomb on Wednesday night.

They closed within 61-57 on a 3-pointer by sophomore guard Hunter Miller with 6:55 to play, but they didn't score for more than six minutes.

"I thought the kids played with a lot of heart," said coach Dave Balza. "I was pretty brutally honest the other night. We as a collective group did not do, in the second half, what we've done the rest of the year, which is fight every possession. Tonight they continued to fight every possession."

They will play East Tennessee State on Saturday.

"It's a tough stretch," Balza said. "But it's hopefully like we've been doing, seasoning us for down the road. We've got to keep pushing and pushing until we get it all figured out and put together."
